I want to begin by letting you know a little bit about what you can expect from my class and a little about who I am. You can expect me to come to class each day, prepared and happy to teach. You can expect me to see you as an individual with both strengths and weaknesses and for me to maintain a classroom that is both relaxed and rigorous. You can expect me to challenge both you and myself. I expect you to treat me and all your classmates with courtesy and respect. I expect you to challenge yourself and me.

我出生于美國佛蒙特州，在上海生活了6年。我的父親是工程師，母親是作家，她出版過多部詩集和書籍。當(dāng)我還是很小的時(shí)候，母親就鼓勵(lì)我保持好奇、嘗試寫作。高中畢業(yè)后，我去了新罕布什爾大學(xué)（the University of New Hampshire）學(xué)習(xí)心理學(xué)，我喜愛這所學(xué)校，但最影響我人生的記憶則來自高中時(shí)光。記得當(dāng)時(shí)的英語老師、數(shù)學(xué)老師常常帶給我們各種游戲和小組活動(dòng) I was born in Vermont, and I have been in Shanghai for six years. My father was an engineer, and my mother is a writer. My mother has published multiple poems and books. At an early age, she has fostered my curiosity and creativity to learn and experiment in my writing. I went to college at the University of New Hampshire, and I loved the school. Yet, the teachers who made the biggest impression on me were from my high school. My first English teacher and math teacher would make learning fun by using games and interesting group activities in class.

我始終相信，在求學(xué)中“犯錯(cuò)”是一件好事，學(xué)生可以在失敗中收獲經(jīng)驗(yàn)。在英語學(xué)習(xí)上，不妨打破“老師的權(quán)威”，用英語去觀察、思考、表達(dá)，一定會(huì)有寶貴的成果。當(dāng)然，這對(duì)許多年輕的孩子而言，能夠?qū)嶋H做到并不容易。因此，我想要和學(xué)生交朋友，并作為伙伴一起去探索這個(gè)世界。 What else can I say about myself? I believe that students should be allowed to make mistakes and that they can learn from them. English is the one subject in High School where a student’s opinion is more important than the teacher’s. As far as writing goes, you will have a chance to do a lot of it, as a way to sort out what you have observed from what you think and what you feel. I realize that not everyone shares my enthusiasm for English, and I see my role as being both a mirror and a lens: someone to help you focus your attention on what we explore together.

作為老師，我努力把課堂營造成“thoughtful”的氛圍。在英語中，“thoughtful”有兩個(gè)涵義——一是關(guān)心身邊的人，二是深思熟慮。通常雙休日，我不給學(xué)生布置作業(yè)。因?yàn)橹苣┦呛图胰斯捕鹊臅r(shí)光，不應(yīng)該讓孩子一個(gè)人沉迷電子產(chǎn)品。相信這樣的“thoughtful”課堂，會(huì)是我們一路學(xué)、一路笑的美好旅程！ Above all, I want our classes to be “thoughtful,” in both senses of the word: kind and considerate of others and also full of thoughts. You can expect to have homework every night but usually not on the weekends. Your parents will also be a big help by giving you a place to do your work, free from distractions and electronics. I trust this will be a course you enjoy and one where we will learn and laugh together each day along the way.
