Good morning ShangYin, as you should already know, the personal goal this month is on being good thinkers. Sounds very simple. It is only thinking, we do that almost every second. But if you pause for a moment and really think about the question, what is it really asking? What does it mean to be a thinker? Even if you feel like you know, can you explain it with words?
If this question sparked your interest, you will enjoy the next couple of minutes because I am going to share with you one the most important moments in my life and the impact it had shaping how I think today.
Many years ago, when I was still in school, if I have a question, my teacher will always tell me to “think a little harder”; or when we are learning about hard problems, I always hear phrases like “putting on our thinking hat”.
To me it sounds like the right thing to say, but I never understood the meaning behind these phrases. I was skeptical because most of the times when I ask questions, it is exactly when I don’t know what to think. So how can I think harder? Where do I even begin?
What bothered me more is that we are expected to be thinkers, as if thinking harder will give us the answer to everything. But no one ever taught us what thinking is. Or given us a direction of where to think. The result is a feeling of sort of knowing the answer, but not 100% sure with the answer. This bothered me greatly, which is why I went into the field of Psychology – The study of how people think.
Fast forward to today, with every bit of knowledge I know, I still struggled defining thinking. But if I have to try, I think
Thinking is the feeling of kind of knowing the answer but not sure with the answer you have. It is to find interest in a thing, and spend time learning about it just to be a little more comfortable with your answer.
Thinking is to use what you know; find what you want to know; and ask questions on what you don’t know. Thinking is to let your mind go free, and see where it wants to take you.
So go out there, pay attention to the things around you. Ask questions, be open, figure out what you want to know. Only then, your mind will show you how truly wonderful it is to be a Thinker.”
