Well known as the titular protagonist of the 1992 Disney animated film and the 2019 live-action remake, Aladdin tells the story of an orphan boy, who inadvertently discovers a magic lamp with extraordinary powers, and from then the entire course of his life is altered unchangeably.
Last Friday, our high-achieving middle school students and the wise and sometimes genie-like BWYA drama teacher Mr. Paul Collins put on a production of the 1940 version of the play by James Norris. This week, we spoke with Collins, to find out why he put so much of his time and energy into this extra-curricular performance.
Macbeth
“Last year we did Macbeth with Grade 9 which was already ambitious for their age, but this year we decided to do an entire middle school show, so it was a really awesome challenge opening it up to the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. 11 out of the 18 actors were from the sixth grade, and as well as this, we opened up helping out backstage to anyone who was interested. 80 students signed up to help with lighting and sound, scenery, and costumes and makeup.”
In order to put this production together, the support team met together every Monday after school, with the cast rehearsing on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We asked Collins about the benefit of the production to the students involved, “It was basically a class, the students had no previous knowledge of how to run a lightboard, costume an actor, or run a set, but as a little army they worked out how to deal with these challenges. It was very ambitious on my part, but as far as the question goes, ‘Why is it beneficial for these students?’, for me the biggest thing is working together in a group. That’s the thing we’re trying to do, I don’t know if you’re going to run off one day as an actor, but I can definitely make sure you know how to work as part of a whole, especially for some of the younger students learning to be less self-centred, and develop as people.”
Finally, the conversation moved onto the benefits of staging shows and performances, compared to purely academic-based group work, “I saw kids learn more focus, how to concentrate more, put more effort in, and ultimately realise they’ll be the ones on the stage! I’ll do everything I can to help, but I wanted them to own it themselves. It’s not my show, maybe I’ll get some credit or blame, but I said to the students ‘You’re the ones up there!’. If you don’t put the effort in, it won’t be good, but if you do, it’ll be an amazing show, and you’ll get that feeling of accomplishment.”
Having watched the excellent performance ourselves, it's clear to see the students followed Collins' advice, and we'd like to praise them for putting together such a wondrous showing, inviting the audience to join them in their magical world. Both the primary and middle school screenings were well-enjoyed by our students and teachers, and it was great to see over 300 parents joining the livestream despite being unable to join us physically. We hope you will enjoy this unworthy highlight reel, and we look forward to sharing more drama, musicals, and talent with you in the future.
