編者按:徐同學(xué)是我校11年級(jí)學(xué)生。他不但學(xué)習(xí)成績優(yōu)異,還擔(dān)任校學(xué)生會(huì)副主席,創(chuàng)辦公益社團(tuán),也是校園十大歌手中位列前茅的實(shí)力唱將。此外,他也積極參與社會(huì)公益實(shí)踐活動(dòng),并通過一些學(xué)術(shù)項(xiàng)目和競賽進(jìn)一步挑戰(zhàn)和提升自己。

Editor's note: Sean Xu, an 11th grader in SHBS, not only outstands academically, but also has been serving as the vice president of the SHBS student Union, running a student public welfare club, and is recognized as one of the top ten singers on campus. In addition, he actively participates in social welfare activities outside campus and further challenges and improves himself through academic projects and competitions.

春季學(xué)期馬上就要開學(xué),11年級(jí)的同學(xué)們普遍都開始感覺到升學(xué)的壓力以及時(shí)間的緊迫,一些同學(xué)也會(huì)有些許焦慮。因此,小編邀請(qǐng)了徐同學(xué)給大家分享一下他的思考與準(zhǔn)備,希望能夠給大家一些啟發(fā)和鼓勵(lì)。

The spring semester is about to begin, and 11th graders begin to feel the real pressure of college application and the ticking of time, and some may even feel anxious. Therefore, we invited Sean to share his current thinking and preparation, in hope of encouraging and inspiring those related.    

大家好,我是上海宏潤博源學(xué)校11年級(jí)學(xué)生Sean。受學(xué)校小編團(tuán)隊(duì)邀請(qǐng),在此與大家分享我過去一年的心境、思考與升學(xué)準(zhǔn)備,以期給同在忙碌的11年級(jí)同學(xué)們一些安慰,也給學(xué)弟學(xué)妹們一些啟發(fā)。

Hello everyone, I am Sean, an 11th grader at Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School. Invited by our school's editorial team, I would like to share with you my state of mind and my preparation for college application in the past year. I hope that busy 11th graders can take comfort from what I share and younger schoolmates can draw inspiration from what I share.

現(xiàn)階段,11年級(jí)的同學(xué)們都在爭分奪秒地為大學(xué)申請(qǐng)做準(zhǔn)備:校內(nèi)課業(yè)GPA,標(biāo)化成績(托福/雅思/ACT/SAT/AP),各種學(xué)術(shù)競賽,夏校項(xiàng)目申請(qǐng)等。確實(shí),GPA和標(biāo)化成績?cè)诖髮W(xué)申請(qǐng)中的重要性毋庸質(zhì)疑。不過,在我們開始為GPA,標(biāo)化和各種競賽和項(xiàng)目沖刺之前,我們應(yīng)該首先注視腳下,回溯過去;去思考,我現(xiàn)在走在怎樣的一條道路上?如果要提煉幾個(gè)詞來概括我迄今為止的人生軌跡,這幾個(gè)詞會(huì)是什么呢?是的,你沒有聽錯(cuò)??v使我們現(xiàn)在學(xué)業(yè)壓力巨大,要爭分奪秒,但我認(rèn)為我們的首要任務(wù)并不是埋頭苦學(xué),而是要先認(rèn)識(shí)自己,復(fù)盤過去之后再放眼未來,規(guī)劃一條契合自身個(gè)性與特質(zhì)的道路。做到了這點(diǎn),我們的成長將會(huì)突飛猛進(jìn),事半功倍。

At present, 11th graders are making full use of every minute to prepare for college application: GPA on campus, grades of standardized tests (TOEFL/IELTS/ACT/SAT/AP), various academic competitions, summer school program applications, etc. Admittedly, the importance of GPA and standardized test scores in college application is unquestionable. However, before we work intensely on our GPA, standardized tests, and various competitions and projects, we should stop to think about the path we are taking through reflecting on the past. If I am supposed to summarize the path of my life so far with a few key words, what will they be? Yes, you heard that right. Even though we are now under great academic pressure, I think our priority is not to immerse ourselves in hard work, but to learn about ourselves first and review the past before we look ahead to the future and figure out a path that fits our personality and characteristics. By doing this, we will be able to grow up by leaps and bounds.

我個(gè)人的成長經(jīng)歷就印證了以上觀點(diǎn)。剛進(jìn)入國際學(xué)校時(shí),雖然我總是忙碌的,也總是被人稱贊“進(jìn)步飛快”,但是我并沒有真正地感受到我所深耕的方方面面給我?guī)黹L足的成長。當(dāng)時(shí),我所學(xué)的是“技”,而非“器”。經(jīng)過在學(xué)校的進(jìn)一步熏陶和錘煉,我看清了大學(xué)申請(qǐng)的本質(zhì)且認(rèn)為以終為始的學(xué)習(xí)和準(zhǔn)備是必要的。

My personal experiences have justified the above point. When I first joined an international school, busy as I always was and much as I was always praised for my "rapid progress", I found that all the efforts I had put into various aspects did not really pay off. At that time, I was actually learning "skills" instead of getting "tools". Further study on campus empowered me to realize the essence of college application and believed that it is necessary to begin with the end in mind.

于是,在10年級(jí)上半學(xué)期,我和升學(xué)老師花費(fèi)了許多時(shí)間,列出一張專屬于我的“事跡表”,并且從這些大事件中提煉出幾個(gè)最能代表我特質(zhì)的詞匯,同時(shí)也列出了我尚欠缺,需要進(jìn)一步發(fā)展的能力,以此作為我未來發(fā)展的基調(diào)。

Therefore, during the 1st semester of my 10th grade year, my college counselor and I spent a lot of time making a "list of events” exclusively for me and picking out a few typical words from these big events that best depict my traits. We also listed my weaknesses which needed to be made up for as the goals I should set for my future development.

此后,我在選擇競賽、夏校、科研等活動(dòng)時(shí),都會(huì)優(yōu)先參考先前確立的方向,在說服自己“該活動(dòng)能帶給我_____的價(jià)值”后,才會(huì)進(jìn)行選報(bào)。以這樣的心態(tài)做同樣的事,收獲也會(huì)大不相同。

Since then, whenever I chose from competitions, summer schools, scientific research, and other activities, I have given priority to my established goals (those keywords), and only after convincing myself that "this activity can reward me with certain value or improve my certain ability"would I sign up for it. Doing the same thing with this mindset will make a big difference in terms of self growth.

從功利角度來說,在進(jìn)行美本申請(qǐng)時(shí),申請(qǐng)資料中的我們并非以生動(dòng)的形象展現(xiàn)在招生官眼前,而是相對(duì)扁平的。在此情況下,我們更加需要建立我們履歷中事件間的聯(lián)系,盡可能刻畫出符合自身的立體形象,或者突出最有代表性的特質(zhì)。招生官希望從申請(qǐng)資料中看到的,是能夠與其所在高校契合的人格形象和特質(zhì),而不僅僅是一系列毫無關(guān)聯(lián)的競賽獎(jiǎng)狀。

From a utilitarian point of view, when we apply for US universities, those of us who are depicted in the application materials are not vividly presented in the eyes of the admission officers. Instead, a relatively flat and two-dimensional image is presented. In this case, we need to establish the connection between the events in our resume. To best portray a three-dimensional image that is in line with ourselves, or to highlight our most striking characteristics, can better attract admission officers. What admissions officers are looking for in the application materials is an image of a vivid student, which reveals traits that fit into their college, rather than a series of unrelated awards won just for the sake of competitions.

以我個(gè)人為例,在我目前的規(guī)劃中,“全面多元”,“商業(yè)邏輯”和“社會(huì)責(zé)任感”是契合我個(gè)性的三個(gè)占據(jù)主導(dǎo)地位的關(guān)鍵詞。從而,我的行動(dòng)展開都會(huì)盡可能圍繞這些主題:比如在校內(nèi)選課方面,我的選課包含廣泛的文科,STEAM課程以及社會(huì)科目(如AP 微觀、宏觀經(jīng)濟(jì),心理,歷史,地理,統(tǒng)計(jì),計(jì)算機(jī),微積分,物理力學(xué)及電磁學(xué)),以展現(xiàn)我的多元與學(xué)習(xí)可塑性。課外活動(dòng)方面,我則會(huì)盡可能傾向于鍛煉領(lǐng)導(dǎo)力及商業(yè)策劃能力的項(xiàng)目制學(xué)習(xí)或比賽。同時(shí),我也參與、開展了許多公益活動(dòng),以培養(yǎng)社會(huì)責(zé)任感。只有這樣,才能讓招生官在瀏覽你的簡歷時(shí)感受到溫度,了解到鮮活的你。

Taking myself as an example. According to my current plan, "comprehensive diversity", "business logic" and "social responsibility" are the three dominant keywords that match my personality. Hence, I make sure the steps that I take stick to these key words as closely as possible. For example, when it comes to choosing school courses, my choices include a wide range of liberal arts, STEM and social subjects (such as AP micro and macroeconomics, psychology, history, geography, statistics, computers, calculus, physics C: Mechanics and Electromagnetism) to reflect my academic diversity and adaptability . In terms of extracurricular activities, I prefer to develop my leadership and business planning skills by participating project-based learning or competitions. At the same time, I have also organized and participated in many public benefit activities to raise my awareness of social responsibility. Only by including these things in your application materials can you make the admission officer feel your humanistic quality and see a vivid you when they browse your resume.

這種駐足思考和復(fù)盤,其實(shí)也是更好地認(rèn)識(shí)我們自己,更好地規(guī)劃我們前行的路。不但是對(duì)于大學(xué)申請(qǐng),對(duì)我們整個(gè)人生都很有益處。畢竟人生是一場馬拉松,大學(xué)申請(qǐng)也只是一個(gè)小的站點(diǎn)。 對(duì)于正在沖刺的11年級(jí)同學(xué)們來說,我們都越發(fā)感受到時(shí)間緊迫,也都或多或少感到焦慮。不過,當(dāng)大家鎖定方向和目標(biāo),堅(jiān)定地走好每一步,就不會(huì)再焦慮和擔(dān)憂,飽經(jīng)汗水澆灌的愿望終會(huì)發(fā)芽。

This “pause and reflection” approach can actually help better understand ourselves and plan our future. It applies not only to college applications, but also to our entire life.  After all, life is a like marathon, and college application is no more than a stop along the way.  For 11th graders who are working hard on their college application, we all feel more or less anxious because we are running of time. However, once we set our goal and take each firm step towards it, we won’t feel worried any longer. Our seeds of “ambition”, if watered by the sweat of “efforts”, will sprout eventually.
