Construction of the new campus of Shenzhen BASIS International School officially commenced on December 31st 2021
On December 31, 2021, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new campus of Shenzhen BASIS International School (BISZ) took place at the new site. This event marked the immediate start of construction of the first BASIS flagship international school. The new campus has been long-awaited by all BISZ teachers, students and parents. Completion of the project is expected early in 2023. Then BASIS international School Shenzhen will move from the Net Valley of Shekou to the new campus.
On December 8, 2021, Ascend (Shenzhen) International Education Group Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as Ascend Shenzhen Company) and China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone Holding Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as China Merchants Shekou) jointly bid 183 million yuan for the Shenzhen Shekou Dongbin International Educational Site.
Construction on this educational site will be jointly undertaken by Ascend Shenzhen Company and China Merchants Shekou. The aim of this project is to create a state-of-the art 21st century school that combines the highest construction standards with cutting-edge technology in a vibrant expatriate location. After the completion of the new campus, BASIS International School Shenzhen will be independently run by Ascend Shenzhen.
Founded in 1979, China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone Holding Co., Ltd. has always been committed to improving the quality of life. At the same time, through its commitment to securing high-quality educational resources, introducing world-famous educational brands, creating a new benchmark in the field of education, providing locations for a number of international schools, and supporting foreign investors in their investment and work in Shenzhen, it has made important contributions to the foreign investment environment and the development of international education in Shenzhen.
As the first overseas campus of BASIS Curriculum Schools, Shenzhen BASIS International School opened in Shekou Net Valley in August 2015. Based on best international practices in teaching and learning, with a particular focus on innovation and academic rigor, BISZ has developed both maturity and stability over the past six years.
In 2018-19, the first batch of graduates of BASIS International School Shenzhen achieved outstanding, world-class, university admission results. 14 graduates received 85 offers from universities or colleges of Arts and Sciences. Of the 12 students applying to US universities, 50% were successfully enrolled in top 30 US colleges (US News and World Report) and 92% were enrolled in top 50 US colleges. In 2020, 33 graduates received 167 admission acceptances, of which more than 50% were Early Decision (ED). Of the 28 students applying to university, 68% were admitted to top 30 US colleges and 93% entered top 50 US colleges. In 2021, 27 graduates received 189 admission acceptances. Of the 23 students applying for US colleges and universities, 83% were successfully enrolled in top 30 US colleges and 100% gained entry to top 50 US colleges. Those colleges and universities who made offers to BISZ students include leading US universities such as the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, Dartmouth College, Cornell University and the University of California Berkeley, as well as highly prestigious UK universities such as Imperial College London and University College London. Despite the influence of the pandemic and the tightening of admissions quotas, the ED list for the 2022 academic year thus far, is still impressive, with offers coming from a number of highly renowned institutions, such as the University of Chicago and Imperial College London.
However, due to the lack of a suitable location, the BISZ educational and hardware facilities have been subject to many restrictions. Furthermore, the school has been over-subscribed for several years. This May, Shenzhen Education Bureau stated in the “Announcement on the Selection Plan for the Key Industry Project of Shekou Dongbin International School” that the construction of a high-standard international school on this site will provide high-quality international educational resources for the region, attracting more overseas high-level professionals to pursue employment and entrepreneurship, and allowing such outstanding professionals to gain a firm foothold in Shekou and contribute to Shenzhen.

Constructed on the site of Dongbin Water Works, the BISZ new campus will be planned and constructed with the highest standards in mind. The total construction area will cover 85,000 square meters, with an estimated total investment of no less than 1.2 billion yuan. Hardware facilities will compare favorably with the best international schools currently in Shenzhen. As the BASIS flagship campus in China, the school will accommodate 1670 students, 670 more students than are currently enrolled. The new campus will continue to maintain small class sizes, with no more than 22 students in each class.
The land area of Dongbin Water Works is 17,110 square meters, which is equivalent to 40 standard basketball courts. This expansive space inspires imaginative planning and construction. The blueprint of a splendid future-oriented campus is about to come true.
According to the plan, the completed BISZ new campus will be similar to a miniature city, with open, blended, complex and diversified spaces. In every space, immersive learning can be realized, allowing teaching and learning to proceed naturally.
After the expansion, the BISZ new campus will continue to uphold our mission to “provide our students with a transformative early childhood and K – 12 education.” On the one hand, the school will guide students to obtain the highest levels of academic competitiveness, providing a future with unlimited possibilities. On the other hand, the school will comprehensively increase and upgrade teaching resources and cultural and sports facilities, emphasize teaching space as a part of education, and build a balanced education system that combines academic rigor with both physical and mental health, thereby promoting the development of the whole child.

The design of the new campus is based on three courtyards. Individualized courtyards are connected functionally in series, with multi-level horizontal and vertical spaces. Connecting the three courtyards, a spacious and bright atrium provides the central hub of the campus. Spiral stairs surround the atrium, enabling students and teachers to connect with each courtyard seamlessly.
A variety of indoor and outdoor public spaces allow education to take place throughout the campus. Large steps, wide corridors, diagonally stacked outdoor courtyards, semi-outdoor courtyard spaces, outdoor terraces and roof terraces all help to provide a truly inspiring location. The extensive range of public activity spaces will provide students with rich collaborative opportunities, developing their independent thinking skills and passion for inquiry.
Breaking with the traditional fishbone-shaped single-row classroom layout, the innovative classroom model connects classrooms, activity spaces and office spaces in series to form a spatial sequence which supports individualized teaching.
Learning spaces are arranged to form a number of small teaching complexes, differentiated according to teaching phase. These include ordinary classrooms, functional classrooms, open spaces and communication spaces. This design echoes the needs of flexible teaching, creating an atmosphere of communication and exploration, and encouraging teachers and students to actively participate in interdisciplinary dialogue that is mutually beneficial.
The new campus will continue to provide students with "advanced, accelerated, rigorous" and challenging in-school courses. Suitably equipped standard classrooms, science laboratories, STEAM laboratories and other functional classrooms will be created with learning as the priority.
In order to satisfy the academic needs of students, a high-standard library is also essential. The new campus will be equipped with a library of about 800 square meters, designed to provide students with information on both cultural and academic matters.
Stunning cultural and sports facilities create a more diversified school life and cultivate the "soft skills" that are indispensable for individual development. The new campus is equipped with a theater of about 1,000 square meters, where large-scale gatherings, performances, awards ceremonies and other school activities will be held. 深圳貝賽思國際學(xué)校（新校區(qū)）將在東濱水廠地塊上高起點規(guī)劃，高規(guī)格建設(shè)，總建筑面積將達(dá)85000平方米，總投資預(yù)計不少于12億，建成后將成為深圳硬件設(shè)施最好的國際學(xué)校之一，也將成為貝賽思旗艦校區(qū)。新校區(qū)繼續(xù)實行小班化教學(xué)，每班學(xué)生最多不超過22名，可容納學(xué)位數(shù)量將從現(xiàn)在的1000個增加到1670個。
