The summer holidays gave everyone various opportunities to step out of their usual routine. Let’s see how some of the Dulwich College Beijing students used the summer break to widen their horizons!
Our first summer story comes from Junior School student Alex Q who discovered more about China's historical city of Datong on the Yellow Earth Plateau.
Three days in Datong

On 6 July, my family and I went to this historic city, Datong, in Shanxi Province.
When I arrived in Datong, I felt it was very cool with ancient buildings everywhere. We entered the ancient city through a gate in the sturdy city walls and arrived at the Pipa Inn. Legend has it that 2000 years ago, in the Han Dynasty, the Huns fought with the Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty had to enter a long-lasting peace with the Huns through marriage, but who would want to marry into “a barbaric raw-meat-eating nation”? At this time, Wang Zhaojun, one of the emperor’s most beautiful concubines, stood up to sacrifice herself for the motherland. Wang Zhaojun was said to be very fond of playing the pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. She came to stay in this inn for one night and left her pipa there. Hence, the inn acquired its name of Pipa Inn.
In the afternoon, we went to Yungang Grottoes which reminded us of ancient China with various Buddha statues, grottoes... My favourite was the glass-made eyes of the Buddha which reflected any surrounding light, cheering up the gloomy cave.
We dragged our tired bodies back to the inn, invigorated by the hope that tomorrow would be an even better and more colourful day.
On the second day, we visited the Hanging Temple, Heng Mountain and toured the ancient city walls. Here, we see the Hanging Temple.
I wonder how this temple was built. The guide told us that the wooden piles were first put in stone to support the hanging temple. It is 50 meters from the ground, built in the North Wei Dynasty. I was really amazed by this temple, so was Li Bai, a well-known poet in ancient China who inscribed the character "SPEC-U-TACULAR" on the stone under the temple. Then we arrived at the foot of Heng Mountain. We reached the top of the mountain in the cable car, amazed by the splendid view of Datong. We then followed the mountain trail to the foot of the mountain, where we savoured liang fen, jelly-like cold noodles served as a salad which provided me with a lingering aftertaste. After a short break, we went to the wall of the ancient city. We ended our happy day by riding a bicycle, watching the sunset, and enjoying the beautiful night scene.
Sunshine always makes me look forward to tomorrow.
On the third day, as I opened my eyes, I knew that day was an extraordinary day. After finishing breakfast, we went out of the door. It was the hottest day of the three days. In the sun, we went to Huayan Temple. I found out in these days that Datong is a big fan of temples. As we entered the gate and followed the guide, we came to the first hall. Following the footsteps of the guide, I found that there are not only modern works, but also works of Qing Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, and even the Buddha statue of the Liao-Jin era in the temple. Although they were more than 900-year-old, they were preserved as new. Then we came to a tower-shaped palace. The guide told us that the whole palace was made of pure brass, weighing 9000 tons.
When we returned to the original road, we came to a shop where I picked out a good present for my grandma. We then found a delicious restaurant and enjoyed and an unforgettable meal. It was the last meal we had in Datong, and then we said goodbye to Datong. Sitting in the high-speed train to Beijing, my mind still lingering behind.

當(dāng)我到達(dá)大同時(shí)，我覺得那里到處都是古建筑，很酷。我們穿過堅(jiān)固城墻上的大門，就進(jìn)入了古城，來到了琵琶客棧。傳說在2000年前的漢朝，匈奴與漢朝戰(zhàn)亂不斷，漢朝必須通過和親與匈奴實(shí)現(xiàn)長(zhǎng)久的和平。漢王朝美麗的王昭君為了國(guó)家挺身而出。據(jù)說王昭君非常喜歡演奏中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)樂器琵琶。她來這家旅店住了一晚，把琵琶留在那里了。因此，該客棧得名為琵琶客棧。
下午，我們?nèi)チ嗽茖?，那里有各種各樣的古老的佛像、石窟，向我們展示著他們所見證的歷史。。。我最喜歡的是佛像的玻璃眼睛，它能反射周圍的光線，為幽暗的山洞帶來一絲光明。
當(dāng)天晚上我們拖著疲憊的身體回到旅店，希望明天會(huì)是一個(gè)更加美好和精彩的一天。
第二天，我們?nèi)⒂^了懸空寺、恒山和古城墻。這里我們看到了懸空的寺廟。
導(dǎo)游向我們介紹了這座廟宇是怎么建的。石頭里面先打入了支撐的木樁，懸空的廟宇得以建成。它離地面50米，建于北魏。這座寺廟真的讓我贊嘆，中國(guó)古代著名詩人李白也很感慨，他在廟宇下面的石頭上刻了字“壯.觀”。然后我們到了恒山腳下。我們乘坐纜車到達(dá)山頂，欣賞了大同的壯麗景色。然后我們沿著山路走到山腳下，品嘗了涼粉，讓我回味無窮。短暫休息后，我們?nèi)チ斯懦菈?。我們騎著自行車，看日落，欣賞美麗的夜景，結(jié)束了快樂的一天。
陽光總是讓我期待明天。
第三天，當(dāng)我睜開眼睛時(shí)，我就知道那天又是特殊的一天。吃完早飯我們便出了門。這是三天中最熱的一天。在烈日下，我們?nèi)チ巳A嚴(yán)寺。這幾天我發(fā)現(xiàn)大同熱愛寺廟。我們進(jìn)入華嚴(yán)寺的大門并跟隨導(dǎo)游來到了第一個(gè)大廳開始參觀。跟隨導(dǎo)游的腳步，我發(fā)現(xiàn)寺內(nèi)不僅有現(xiàn)代作品，還有清代、明代的作品，甚至還有遼金時(shí)代的佛像。盡管它們已經(jīng)有900多年的歷史，但它們?nèi)匀槐４嫒缧?。然后我們來到了一座塔狀的宮殿。導(dǎo)游告訴我們，整個(gè)宮殿由純黃銅制成，重達(dá)9000噸。
在出去的路上，我在禮品店為奶奶挑選了一份禮物。然后我們找到了一家美味的餐廳，享受了一頓難忘的晚餐。這是我們?cè)诖笸缘淖詈笠活D飯，隨后我們便向大同道別。坐在開往北京的高鐵上，我的思緒依然留在大同。
