Congratulations to all our 2020 SUIS graduates! We are delighted in particular to announce that two students from our SUIS Pudong received offers from the University of Oxford, while one student from the SUIS Gubei Campus received an offer from the University of Cambridge! These three students have been studying at SUIS since junior high school. The SUIS Gubei student received an offer from the University of Cambridge's Selwyn College to read Math, while SUIS Pudong students Cindia and Rina received offers from the University of Oxford's St. Catherine's College to read Human Sciences and Corpus Christi College to read English Language & Literature, respectively.

The University of Oxford is a world-famous place of learning renowned for its beautiful architecture and centuries of tradition, and along with the University of Cambridge, its admissions process is the most arduous in the UK. Applicants must undertake challenging entrance exams in Shanghai, submit highly-scrutinized personal statements and achieve impeccable grades in order to earn an invitation to be interviewed in Oxford itself. For many Oxford courses, less than half of the applicants even get to this stage. In the end, fewer than 18% of all applicants will be accepted.

SUIS Pudong made its most strenuous efforts to support and guide Cindia and Rina through the rigorous application process, and several of the school's teachers were drafted to put them through their paces with practice interviews, attempting to replicate the intimidating interview atmosphere with tough questions based on pre-interview reading material significantly more challenging than offered by their A Level textbooks. The girls passed these tests with flying colours, emerging somewhat shaken but quietly confident for the challenge ahead, and flew to the UK in early December for the real interview.

Cindia and Rina evidently did just as well as they did in their practice interviews, with both students gaining acceptances after their interview despite being presented with some tricky challenges such as being shown a mammoth tooth and asked to guess what it was. It’s often the case that the first college that interviews applicants is not fully convinced of their admissibility, allowing other colleges to give the students a second chance the next day. This was not the case for Cindia or Rina who received immediate offers from St Catherine's College to read Human Sciences and from Corpus Christi College to read English Language & Literature, respectively.
